Beyond the Price Guide: What a Lender-Grade Aircraft Valuation Should Tell You
Every aircraft loan rests on a number. The question is whether that number describes the aircraft actually sitting in the hangar, or an average aircraft of the same make, model and year.
Published value guides and asking prices are useful starting points. They are not collateral analysis. Two business jets with the same model year and similar total time can be hundreds of thousands of dollars apart once engine status, inspection timing, avionics, damage history and records quality are accounted for. A lender who advances against the average is lending against an aircraft it does not own a lien on.
Three values, three questions
A lender-grade appraisal should state more than one value, because a lender faces more than one scenario.
- Fair Market Value (FMV) is the most probable price between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither under compulsion, with adequate marketing time. It answers: what is this asset worth in a normal sale?
- Orderly Liquidation Value (OLV) assumes a seller under some pressure but with a reasonable exposure period, typically 90 to 180 days with a competent broker. It answers: what do we recover if we have to sell?
- Forced Liquidation Value (FLV) assumes an auction-style sale under severe time constraint, often within 30 to 45 days. It is the floor.
The gap between FMV and OLV is material and varies by model. Large-cabin jets with deep global buyer pools tend to show narrower gaps. Light jets, niche configurations and aging or orphaned types show wider ones. That gap, not the headline FMV, is where credit risk lives.
The practical guidance is simple: price advance rates against OLV, then manage the distance to FMV with reserves, covenants and periodic value tests. Every value in the report should carry its assumptions in writing: marketing period, inspection contingencies, and whether the aircraft is valued as-is or airworthy.
Serial-number specifics
Within one make, model and year, the serial number drives the variance. A credible report itemizes the adjustments rather than burying them in a single conclusion:
- Prior use: Part 91 private versus Part 135 charter, high-cycle shuttle work, or specialized roles such as EMS or offshore.
- Environment and storage: corrosion exposure, climate, hangar habits.
- Maintenance provider quality and the time remaining to major events.
- Engine program enrollment, coverage level and transferability.
- Avionics relevance: ADS-B Out, WAAS/LPV, FANS/CPDLC, connectivity, and whether the suite is still OEM-supported.
- Damage history and the quality and documentation of repairs.
- Records completeness, including back-to-birth traceability for life-limited parts.
- If an appraisal cannot show how each of these moved the number, the lender cannot defend the number to credit committee, to an auditor, or later in a workout.
Seven questions before approval
Before a file goes to committee, the underwriter should be able to answer:
- Has the aircraft been appraised by a credentialed, independent appraiser using current transactions, not only book values?
- Are the airframe, engine and APU logbooks complete, original and continuous?
- Is the aircraft current on required inspections, ADs and applicable service bulletins, and are any discrepancies deferred?
- What is the borrower’s operating profile: Part 91 or 135, expected annual hours, hangared and professionally managed or not?
- Are the engines on a manufacturer or third-party program, at what coverage level, and is it current and transferable?
- Is there damage history, and was it repaired at an authorized facility with complete engineering data?
- How liquid is the market for this specific model: how many comparable aircraft are for sale, and are values firming or softening?
A “no” or “unknown” on any of these is not automatically a decline. It is a reason to adjust loan-to-value, tenor or structure.
What the appraisal scope should include
When engaging an appraiser for a financing, ask for a scope that covers:
- A market study: inventory, absorption, days on market and price dispersion for the model.
- Comparable analysis with explicit serial-number adjustments.
- Maintenance-adjusted FMV, OLV and FLV, each with stated assumptions.
- A depreciation forecast with sensitivity to rates and utilization.
- A liquidity assessment with expected time-to-sale bands.
- A records review summary and exception list.
The bottom line
Aircraft remain durable collateral, but value dispersion between individual serial numbers has widened as inventories have normalized and the cost of capital has stayed elevated. In that environment, the lenders who protect their portfolios are the ones who underwrite the specific aircraft, not the category. The next article in this series looks at the single largest driver of that difference: maintenance economics.

The Key Role of Aircraft Appraisal Companies in Aviation Transactions
In the intricate world of aviation transactions, aircraft appraisal companies play an indispensable role. These companies provide vital services that influence buying, selling, and financing decisions for aircraft. Their assessments guide sellers in setting the appropriate price and help ensure buyers are making informed investments.
Understanding the Need for Accurate Aircraft Appraisals
Accurate appraisals form the foundation of sound financial decisions in aviation transactions. Aircraft, due to their high value and the complexities involved in their assessment, require precision and reliability in valuation. Properly conducted appraisals mitigate the risks that buyers and sellers face, providing a stable ground upon which negotiations can proceed. Without these appraisals, both parties may encounter unforeseen financial discrepancies after the transaction.
Aircraft appraisal companies bring expertise and an unbiased perspective that are necessary for these evaluations. By relying on data such as maintenance records, market demand, and technological advances, they generate reliable aircraft values. With such insights, stakeholders can negotiate prices rooted in reality rather than speculation, fostering transparency in transactions. A thorough appraisal can highlight potential issues that may require attention, allowing stakeholders to adjust their expectations accordingly.
By fostering a clear understanding of an aircraft’s worth, appraisals contribute to setting market standards. As the aviation industry evolves, the criteria for appraisal must adapt to reflect these changes. Valuation accuracy is crucial, given that aerospace technology and market conditions can fluctuate significantly. Hence, the involvement of experienced aircraft appraisal companies is pivotal in aligning aircraft values with current trends and providing context to their assessments.
Examining the Influence of Appraisals on Financing Options
Aircraft appraisals directly influence lending and financing considerations. Financial institutions rely heavily on these appraisals when determining loan eligibility and terms. According to AOPA Finance, lenders typically provide up to 85% financing for the book or appraised value, or 85% of the purchase price—whichever amount is lower. This underscores the appraisal’s significance, as it directly affects the financial viability of potential buyers.
The precision of appraisal values ensures that financiers can accurately gauge the risks and returns associated with funding an aircraft purchase. An overrated aircraft can lead to oversized loans, while underrating can prevent buyers from obtaining adequate funding. Thus, appraisals are a fundamental component in maintaining the balance between reasonable financing structures and securing investor interests. Aircraft appraisal companies, by offering valuations aligned with market realities, facilitate fair and secure financial arrangements.
Moreover, appraisals help bridge knowledge gaps between aircraft owners and financial entities. During lending, an appraisal functions as a reference benchmark, offering an unbiased estimate of an aircraft’s actual value. Through these assessments, lenders gain confidence in the loan-to-value ratio, knowing their capital is safeguarded against asset depreciation. In essence, the interdependence of appraisal accuracy and financing terms is inextricably linked in aviation markets.
Exploring Valuation Methodologies and Challenges
The valuation of aircraft is a multifaceted process that necessitates a profound understanding of aviation dynamics. Appraisal companies employ an array of methodologies, including comparative analysis, cost evaluation, and income potential consideration. Each method provides a unique lens through which the value of an aircraft can be determined. Given the variations in aircraft configurations, use cases, and age, the selection of a suitable method is crucial to ensuring an accurate appraisal.
The comparative approach involves analyzing similar aircraft within the market to estimate fair market value. This method is contingent on having a robust database and an understanding of the nuances that set different models apart. Alternatively, the cost evaluation approach focuses on calculating the replacement or reproduction cost, adjusted for depreciation and obsolescence. Both methodologies require comprehensive data and professional judgment to interpret contextual factors like maintenance history, regulatory compliance, and prevailing market trends.
Yet, appraisals are not without challenges. Market fluctuations, technological advancements, and regulatory shifts can influence valuation benchmarks significantly. Aircraft appraisal companies must remain agile by continuously updating their valuation criteria and methodologies. Recognizing the Importance of Compliance and Documentation in Appraisals
Compliance and thorough documentation are essential components of a reliable aircraft appraisal. Aviation operates within a highly regulated environment, where maintenance standards, airworthiness directives, and operational requirements significantly affect an aircraft’s value. Aircraft appraisal companies must carefully review logbooks, maintenance records, inspection reports, and certification documents to verify accuracy and completeness. Even minor discrepancies in documentation can influence perceived value and raise concerns during a transaction.
Regulatory compliance directly impacts marketability. An aircraft that adheres to applicable aviation authority requirements is more attractive to prospective buyers and lenders. Conversely, gaps in maintenance tracking or incomplete service bulletins may require corrective action before a transaction can proceed smoothly. Appraisers assess not only the physical condition of the aircraft but also the integrity of its documentation trail. This dual focus ensures that valuations reflect both tangible and administrative aspects of ownership.
In addition, standardized reporting practices enhance clarity for all parties involved. A well-prepared appraisal report outlines assumptions, methodologies, supporting data, and relevant findings in a structured format. This transparency allows buyers, sellers, legal advisors, and financial institutions to understand how conclusions were reached. Clear documentation also supports dispute resolution if valuation questions arise later. By emphasizing compliance, accuracy, and detailed reporting, aircraft appraisal companies strengthen confidence in aviation transactions and contribute to a more stable marketplace.
The role of aircraft appraisal companies is indispensable in the aviation industry, serving as the bridge between market valuation and financial transactions. Through precise assessments, they enable well-informed decision-making among buyers, sellers, and financiers alike. Their methodologies, adept at navigating complex aviation market dynamics, ensure that appraisals remain relevant and reflective of current trends. As technology further enhances appraisals, the industry stands to benefit from increased accuracy and efficiency in all facets of aircraft valuation.
Aircraft appraisers equip the aviation market with the necessary tools for transparent and reliable transactions. The insights they provide influence financing decisions and establish fair market benchmarks, which are important for maintaining financial stability. As the industry continues to evolve, the capabilities of aircraft appraisal companies will only become more integral in shaping its future. By continually adapting to technological advances, regulatory requirements, and market changes, these companies ensure that the true value of aircraft is always within reach.
